Steel Legion is a NES homebrew metroidvania 2D platformer set in a cyberpunk universe where you play as a cyborg commando. Get ready to test your skills to the limit with the intricate level design and advanced gameplay that earned us the mention of “NES hard” by several fans of the game!

History

Even though Steel Legion is a team effort by Aeon & Star Interactive, most of the heavy lifting was done by François Brodeur.

François is a jack-of-all-trades in the gaming world – he’s a musician, pixel artist, level designer, game designer, and NES/arcade fanatic. He’s been glued to games since the OG NES days in the 80s. When COVID hit, he decided to pick up some new skills, like programming, to create his own retro games. He got really into pixel art for the game’s look and has been cooking up chiptune, drawing inspiration from Hard Rock chiptune and the tunes of Tim Follin. Plus, he’s been jamming in punk, rock, and metal bands since the early 2000s.

Aeon & Star Interactive is basically just a bunch of friends and family who love making indie games. We’re all about crafting retro and neo-retro games with killer worlds, levels, and stories that hit players right in the feels.

Features

Steel Legion is an authentic metroidvania 2D platformer just like in the good ol’ days! You have plenty of secrets to find, thus allowing you to immerse yourself ever so deeper in this dystopian universe. We wanted to stay true to the genre with Steel Legion and deliver you a game that feels like the ones back in the days. We’ve made it tough and the only way to make it to the end is by mastering new abilities and weapons.

Explore an interconnected world: The game is a well-crafted metroidvania with four different non-linear stages that include their own bosses, abilities, secrets, keys and quests. Explore in any order you want the dangerous mines, the wretched sewers, the vicious city-top or the mysterious A.I. base.
Find secrets and abilities: Use special weapons to break down walls. Use hyper jump to access previously blocked areas. Use special missiles to target hard-to-find switch for blocked doors to open. All of this requiring thoughtful experimentation.
Good ol’ NES game: With it’s high-quality 8-bit pixel art and thunderous hard rock chiptune soundtrack, Steel Legion won’t disappoint you! Inspired by the best NES games out there, we wanted to give you the feeling of playing a game that could’ve easily been created back in the days.
